Adoption Act: Consultation Paper (html)

This consultation paper, provides information about the operation of adoption law in Victoria at the time of the review, and asks questions inviting the public to respond.

Ensuring children’s best interests and rights are the main considerations, the Commission focussed on:

  • Eligibility to adopt and the application process
  • Access to adoption information
  • Birth certificates of adopted people.

The Commission is not examining adoption laws and practices that existed before the Adoption Act 1984; not reviewing the law regarding intercountry adoption programs, nor considering adoptions by same-sex couples or contact statements.

Following this paper, the commission received many submissions and, in February 2017, published a final report
